The Software Development Life Cycle in 30 Seconds

Every software product follows a process. It has a name: the Software
Development Life Cycle.

THE SIX STAGES
Plan → Design → Build → Test → Deploy → Maintain

It's a lifecycle, not a tool. No vendor sells you "an SDLC" — it's the shape
of how your team works, and it loops: maintenance feeds the next round of
planning. Different teams run it differently (agile, iterative, phased), but
the stages are the same work.

THE BOTTLENECK
Running tests by hand, copying files to a server, repeating the same release
steps every time — that's slow, and it's where mistakes get in. Not because
anyone is careless, but because humans are bad at doing identical things
identically, dozens of times.

WHERE CI/CD FITS
CI/CD automates part of the lifecycle — the repetitive delivery part:

Push → Checks → Tests → Build → Deploy

Every code change triggers the pipeline. Checks and tests run before
anything ships, so a broken build fails in CI instead of in production.

TWO THINGS WORTH BEING HONEST ABOUT

1. Deployment often isn't fully automatic. Plenty of good teams gate
production behind a manual approval — that's a deliberate release
policy, not a missing feature.

2. Not everything should be automated. Planning, design and architecture
decisions are judgement work. CI/CD automates the parts that are the
same every time, which is exactly what frees up attention for the parts
that aren't.
