Search Git History Like a Pro | Git Log, Blame, Show & Diff Explained
Ever wondered who changed a line of code, when it happened, or why your application suddenly stopped working?
In this video, you'll learn how to search Git history and investigate changes in a real Ruby on Rails project.
You'll discover:
- How to explore commits using `git log`
- How to search commit messages using `--grep`
- How to find changes affecting a specific file
- How to identify line-level history using `git blame`
- How to inspect commits using `git show`
- How to compare historical code using `git diff`
Learn how to debug smarter by understanding your project's history instead of guessing.
The whole video follows one bug: a payment flow that worked yesterday and doesn't today, in code you didn't write. Each command narrows the search — log shows you everything, --grep filters by commit message, a file path limits it to one file, blame points at the line, show reveals the change, and diff compares that commit against its parent.
Two things worth being precise about. `--grep` searches commit messages, not your source code — if the word isn't in the message, it won't match. And `blame` tells you which commit last modified a line, which is not the same as who caused the bug: a formatting pass or a rename will happily put someone's name on a line they never meaningfully touched. History is evidence, not the whole story — check the surrounding commits and the pull request discussion when you can.
The commit hash `a1b2c3d` used throughout is illustrative; swap in a real one from your own repository.
